meanings:
  • Helena - this song is partially dedicated to Gerard and Mikey ways grandmother.  Elena Lee Rush.  She taught Gerard how to draw, sing and paint, and she gave him his first car - a white van that appears in the original im not okay (i promise) video.   The CD is also mainly dedicated to her too. The part "can you hear me'' and ''are you near me'' is for.   but this song also starts the concept of the CD.  a man and a woman die in a car crash, ''when both our cars collide''.  except the woman doesn't really die, the man only thinks she has.  the man is sent to hell, the song is mourning for Helena's death by the man.  he is wishing he can see her again and he gives his last goodbyes.
  • give em hell kid - ''This is how we like to do it in the murder scene means that the teenage pregnant girl doesn't want to care for her baby.  I can tell because someone said ephedrine is a diet pill which can kill a baby if taken during pregnancy   the girl and the boy are not ready for a baby, let alone marriage - there too young for that.  the one that gave a definition.
  • You know what they do to guys like us in prison - this song is about a man who is involved with crime ''In the middle of a gunfight  in the centre of a restaurant.  He believes the police will be unable to catch him ''Well there never gonna get me there like a bullet through a flock of doves''.  But he is arrested and sent to prison.  The rest of the song refers to prison life ''Will they give me a chair or a lethal injection, or a swing from a rope if you dare''.  this refers to thoughts of the prisoner, the line'' What they ask of you will make you want to stay', so long'', refers to him thinking about suicidal and may also refer to prison rape and other abuse.
  • Im not okay (i promise) - In this song, a boy loves a girl very much, but not enough to break up with her boyfriend to be only with him.  The two sneak around and continue to do so although her boyfriend has caught them multiple times ''Remember when you broke your foot from jumping out the second floor''.  But there is jealousy when the boy sees the girl with her boyfriend.  The many attempts at trying to convince her to break off her relationship to be with him falls short  ''What will it take to show you that it's not the life that it seems''.  He finally tells her he will no longer sneak around '' I held you close as we both shook for the last time''.  Because it wears him out to deal with the secrecy.  She makes attempts at charming him into staying but he no longer falls for her acts, but he is still heart broken ''im not okay'' because he still loves her very much.  As much as he tells her he is alright ''but you really need to listen to me, because im telling you the truth, i mean this, im okay'' he is really not.
  • The ghost of you - this song deals with fear of dealing with losing someone.  It is not interpreted about losing someone special.  According to the band the whole song is about losing people.
  • The jetset of life is gonna kill you - This song seems to be about drug abuse and maybe even suicide.  The lyrics ''It gives the weak flight, it gives the blind side'', support this theory, as does ''Lost in the prescription shes got something else in mind''.
  • Interlude - this song is about a girl killing herself, but gerad or the band didn't really give any song meanings to this song :C
  • Thank you for the venom - this song is about people who come to your door preaching about god, and trying to get you to believe in what they believe, but you just want them to leave you alone ''give me a reason to believe, preach all you want but who's  gonna save me?''
  • Hang 'em high - this song is about someone who gets in a car crash.  he is paralyzed for five years.  with no reason to be alive.  he continually relieves the pain and the experience of the car crash.  he feels like he's suffering, and cannot wait ill the end.
  • its not a fashion statement its a death   wish -  in this song he is saying that his lover betrays him and lets him down.  he dies (either physically or emotionally) and comes back for revenge on her and will bring her down the way that she did to him. he wants him but he wants her to be punished the same time.
  • Cemetery drive - there are many debated memories about the meaning of this song, but this is the most popular one.  a woman is committing adultery and cheating on her on her husband ''so i won't stop lying, won't stop dying''.  She can no longer stand the pain of keeping it a secret so she takes her own life. ''They found you on the bathroom floor, singing songs that make you slit your wrists, it isn't that much fun, looking down a loaded gun''
  •  a second theory was that one of gerard and mikeys close friends committed suicide just days before they left for the first MCR tour. she allegedly shot herself in the bathroom and Gerard wrote this song about her when he was grieving.
  • Bury me in black - Gerard was pissed off. ''i wanna see what your insides are like on the insides, i bet you're not fucking pretty on the inside''.  this song was written when gerard was a heavy alcoholic  and the song is about a drinking partner ''you've worn out all your dancing shoes this time''.  Gerard is once again drunk, ''these eyes have too much to drink this time''.  her is noe of to tell his ex-drinking partner how angry he is at being abandoned ''first he tries to call him '' been calling you all week to get my shotgun, but then he decided he'll go visit him.  he then gets into a drunken fight with him ''and well i can explain, what happened to my face last night.
  • i never told you what i do for a living - the album is about a man and a woman, they both die - the man goes to hell and the woman goes to heaven.  the man then makes a deal with the devil that if he brings 1000 souls to the devil he can be with his wife again.  as the last song on this album this tells the conclusion to the story.  ''and we'll dance alone to the tune of your death, we'll love again, we'll laugh again, and its better of this way, and never again, and never again they gave us two shots to the back of the head,  and were all dead now".
